About Illumination Painting

Raquy discovered illumination painting when she saw the illuminated korans at the Islamic Art Museums in Istanbul. She immersed herself in this ancient art form, training first at the historical Cagfera Medresse in the old city of Istanbul and now studies both illumination painting and miniature under master illuminist Nazan Berbercioglu at the Klasik Sanatlar Art Academy.

An illumination painting is the art of decorating a sacred manuscript with golden motives such as flowers, leaves, borders, geometric shapes and knots, using primarily gold paint.

Islamic Illumination has been practiced in many parts of the Muslim world for over a millennium. Tezhip is derived from the Arabic word zahab, which means gold.

In the Ottoman Empire illuminated manuscripts were commissioned by the Sultan. In Topkapi Palace, these manuscripts were created by the artists working in Nakkashane, the atelier of the miniature and illumination artists. Both religious and non-religious books could be illuminated.

RAQUY’S ARTISTIC VISION

In her Illumination paintings Raquy uses both Ottoman and Hebrew themes. Her most unique works are her series of illuminated music manuscripts and her self portraits where she is flying or portrayed as an ottoman puppet.
