: Tava is delighted to host Raquy Danziger, a celebrated performer, teacher, and composer known worldwide for her expertise on the dumbek, or darbuka, the Middle-Eastern goblet drum. Raquy will teach her “Rhythm for Dancers” workshop $50 in advance/$60 at door (space permitting), followed by a performance with her new band, DUM ($20/$15 for workshop participants) . Both events held at at Dance Dimensions, 15 Cross St. Norwalk, CT.

Rhythm for Dancers presents a unique approach to playing zills and gives dancers practical skills that they can use while performing. We will go through some traditional rhythms and then explore ways in which to solo over those rhythms. We will also practice accompaniment and left hand /right hand independence. Note: This workshop is open to dancers OR drummers. Participants can either use zills or any hand drum. Stick around for a unique performance with Raquy and her new band DUM.

Showtime 5:30pm: This electrifying show features Turkish style darbuka/dumbek drumming. The ensemble performs intricate and dazzling compositions comprised of rhythms from Turkey, Egypt, Iran and India as well as funk, samba and hip hop beats. In addition to the drumming pieces, the show includes Raquy’s dreamy melodic pieces. In these songs Raquy plays the mystical 12 – stringed King Kemenche Tarhu, a futuristic version of the Persian spike fiddle accompanied by the Turkish Baglama and a tight drumming ensemble.
