In the Moonlight

This painting is a portrait of Raquy’s kamancha teacher from Azerbaijan, Imamyar Hasanov, one of the worlds greatest kamancha players.

Imamyar’s signature song is called “In the Moonlight”, a song that is popular both in Azerbaijan and in Turkey. The notes to that song can be found written around the gold frame.

He is portrayed playing his kamancha in the moonlight. Raquy uses real gold for the moon and the “tiğ” - the beams of the moon shining down.

Two of the beams also represent a compass, with one leg in the ground and one leg in the air.
